Custom 40×40 Metal Building

The 40×40 metal building in this package comes standard with 10′ legs fully enclosed. Garage doors, walk-in doors, and windows are available for an additional cost. You can also make your 40 by 40 metal building taller in 2′ increments, with up to 20′ legs available.
With 1,600 square feet (sq. ft) to work with, this building size is a practical fit for common building types like a workshop, storage building, RV storage, metal barn layout, commercial building, or four-vehicle car garage. Some customers even configure it as a metal garage with larger openings for overhead traffic.
Specs and Standard Features
Here are the key specs most customers look for when comparing a 40×40 building size to other building types:
- Footprint. 40′×40′ (1,600 square feet/1,600 sq. ft)
- Standard leg height. 10′
- Taller options. Increase height in 2′ increments up to 20′ legs
- Enclosure options. Standard package is fully enclosed, but sides and gables can be left open if you want a carport-style layout
- Access options. Add garage doors, walk-in doors (walk doors), and windows as needed
- Standard orientation. Vertical roof with vertical sides and vertical ends, using steel framing and roofing panels designed for outdoor use

This is my second building I have ordered. The first building has performed superbly. The crew that put it up was efficient and did a great job.
How likely to use again? well this is the second time to use them and also planning a third in the future. Can't beat the price, no worrying about getting materials or delivery just prep site and they do the rest.
Quick and easy to build. It's great to see the prices adjust for each upgrade chosen as well.

I was impressed with the customer service call last week and decided to complete the purchase online.
It was very user friendly and organized. Pricing was offered for every feature added and the sum total was visible the entire time. The 360 degree visual of selections was great. Each feature had a brief description. Other companies should take note. I have not seen this anywhere else

It is easy to navigate and I can see the carport the way I wanted to look because of the 3D viewing.
You have the only site for metal buildings that i could find that actually makes the process easy! Thank you for that!
The 3D design tools and the customization options really made Alan's the best choice. So many of the competition did not offer the size garage I wanted.
Love the 3-D Builder! Called with a few questions and Emily provided answers for all of them. So far, so good.
The building is just what was ordered and the installers were very professional, courteous and timely.
Popular Ways Customers Use A 40×40
A 40×40 metal building gives you a flexible building size that can work with a few different building types. Here are some of the most common ways customers put 1,600 square feet to work.
Workshop Or Storage Building
A 40×40 is a comfortable footprint for a workshop with room left over for a storage building setup. It’s a cost-effective way to keep tools, seasonal equipment, and supplies protected, especially when you want a prefab metal building that’s still customizable.
Car Garage With Garage Doors
Many customers order this building as a car garage, often with multiple garage doors so vehicles and equipment can move in and out easily. Depending on the layout, overhead doors can make day-to-day access simpler than relying on a single opening.
RV Storage or RV Garage
If you’re planning RV storage, height and door clearance become the main priorities. A 40×40 can be configured as an RV garage with taller legs and larger openings, and roll-up doors are a common choice when you want straightforward access without extra swing clearance.
Commercial Building or Small Warehouse
For light commercial use, a 40×40 can function as a small warehouse, staging area, or inventory space. It’s one of those wide metal buildings that can be sized for storage-first workflows while still leaving room for a workbench, packing area, or equipment parking.
Customization Options (Doors, Openings, and Layout)
Sides can be left open to be used as a carport or fully closed and turned into a fully enclosed metal building. If you want to buy it as a carport, you can leave the gables open or close one or both gables.

If you want more protection and security, you can close one or both gables and treat it like a traditional enclosed building. You can make it taller in 2′ increments with up to 20′ legs available.
Your customization options mostly come down to how you want to enter the building and how you plan to use the space day to day. Garage doors are a common choice for vehicles and equipment, while walk-in doors (walk doors) make it easier to get inside without opening a larger door each time. If you’re deciding between overhead doors and roll-up doors, think first about clearance and how you want the door to operate.
Planning tip: If you expect frequent foot traffic, place a walk door near your driveway or main approach. If you’re storing vehicles, trailers, or larger equipment, plan garage door placement so you can pull in and back out without tight turns.
Inside, many customers aim for open, usable, clear-span space that supports the layout they have in mind, whether it’s a workshop, storage building, or another one of their preferred building types. That’s one reason this footprint is popular for custom metal buildings.
Roof Style and Exterior Options
The 40-by-40 metal buildings come standard with vertical sides, vertical ends, and a vertical roof. Upon request, and for the same price, the sides and ends can be built with metal lap siding. Below is a picture showing the lap siding.
When customers compare roof style options, the goal is usually simple: manage water, handle seasonal weather, and match the look they want on the property. Roof pitch plays a role here, since a steeper pitch can help move rain and snow off the roof more quickly.

These 40-by-40 steel buildings and carports are custom-built to your size, style, and options. You get to choose between 16 different color options for the roof and trim. And if you close the sides or ends, you can also pick the color you want them to be.

Colors are approximate and may vary.
Wind Ratings, Snow Load, and Engineering
These sizes of metal carports and metal buildings come certified with 150 mph and 35 psf. There is an optional 150 mph and 40 psf available for an additional cost. They come fully braced and anchored, along with blueprint drawings.
Because snow load (psf) and wind requirements vary by location, the best configuration for your building size can depend on local permitting rules and site conditions. If you’re comparing building types for RV storage, a workshop, or a commercial building, it helps to start with your local requirements, then choose the steel framing and options that match those targets.

Steel carports come with 14 ga tubing, which is 2 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ square tubing, or you can upgrade to the 12 ga tubing, which comes with 2 1/4″ by 2 1/4″ tubing. Ask which steel-framing options are available for your specific building configuration, since availability can vary by building type and location.
If you’re unsure what your area calls for, we can help you identify the right starting point before finalizing your order.
Free Delivery and Professional Installation in 21 States
Delivery and Installation in Our 21-State Service Area
Building costs and building prices can vary based on your options and location, while permitting and wind/snow requirements can vary by county and state, including Texas.
If you’re ordering in Florida, ask about the Florida upgrade package built to Florida building codes. Delivery is available in most Florida counties. For this building size, a telescopic forklift is required to be on-site during installation to help the crew lift the structure due to its weight. This lift must be able to lift 5000 lbs and extend 10′ above the leg height of the steel building.

We anchor the building to the ground with mobile home anchors or asphalt with rebar, and to the cement with concrete anchor bolts. The location for the building must be level or within at least a 3″ level or lower, or we will not be able to install it.
Building Prices and How Ordering Works
Steel building prices are subject to change without notice.
Upon ordering the metal building at Alan’s Factory Outlet, a 17% deposit is due with either a credit card or you can mail a check for the deposit. When your metal building is scheduled for delivery, 50% of the remaining balance is due.
The remaining final balance is due when the steel building is delivered and installed. Once you order, you will be contacted, and a copy of the order will be emailed to you for you to review and approve to make sure everything is just like you want it.
If you’re trying to estimate the price of a 40×40 steel building, the biggest factors are usually the options you choose (like doors, height, and enclosure), and your local requirements.
For a quick starting point on building prices and building cost ranges, you can reference our Metal Building Prices page, then refine your configuration from there. That approach is often more cost-effective than guessing, since small changes to doors and height can shift the total.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re planning on acquiring a new metal building, chances are you have questions about sizing, pricing, and what works best for your space. This FAQ covers some of the most common details customers want to know, from square footage to how features like door layout or snow load upgrades can affect cost and usability.
Use these quick answers as a starting point to figure out which building size and setup make the most sense for your project.

Price depends on the building cost drivers you choose, like height, enclosure, door and window options, and any upgrades needed for local wind and snow load targets (psf). For accurate building prices, start with the base configuration, then adjust options to match your site and plans.
A 40-by-40 building size is 1,600 square feet (1,600 sq. ft). Many customers like it because it offers open, usable, clear-span space for common building types like storage, workshops, RV storage, or a multi-vehicle garage layout.
Standard sizes for a metal building usually follow common widths and lengths, then get customized with leg height, roof style, and openings. Garage doors or roll-up doors can change how the space functions, so it helps to choose access points first, then confirm the size that fits your use case.
A 30-by-40 building is 1,200 square feet. It’s smaller than a 40×40, but it can still work well for basic storage or a compact workshop, depending on your door layout and height needs.
