Planning on building a garage? Here is everything you need to know about planning the right size for your garage.
Choose your garage size:
What is the size of a standard 2-car garage?
A standard 2-car garage is 20 feet wide by 20 feet deep. Many 2-car garages are only 18×20, which is barely large enough for two small cars. Even a 20×20 garage is a tight fit for two cars, making it difficult to open car doors without hitting your other car or the wall.
A 22-foot-wide garage provides a more comfortable fit for two cars, and two larger vehicles can comfortably fit side-by-side in a 24-foot-wide garage.
A typical full-size car, minivan, or SUV is usually 16-17 feet long. These vehicles can fit in a garage that is 20 feet deep, but a deeper garage will provide more space.
Here is a sketch of a 24×30, 2-car garage, with 720 square feet of floor space:
What size is a 2.5-car garage?
A 2.5-car garage is typically 26 or 28 feet wide and at least 20 feet deep. That is a little larger than a large two-car garage, but smaller than a small three-car garage. The extra space can be used for a motorcycle, lawnmower, storage space, or a work area.
What is the size of a one-car garage?
A typical one-car garage is 12 feet wide and 20 feet deep. A standard single-car garage usually has a nine-foot-wide garage door. A 12×20 garage is just large enough for a full-size car, minivan, or SUV.
Many people want to store tools, lawnmowers, and other equipment in their garage. In this case, you should get a 18-foot-wide, 1 ½-car garage. You may also want to build a garage that is deeper than 20 feet to provide extra storage space.
What size is a 3-car garage?
The minimum size of a three-car garage is 30 feet wide and 20 feet deep. A more standard size for a three-car garage is 32×22. A 36×24 garage is more ideal for a three-car garage. With these larger dimensions you will have space for storage and a workbench, in addition to room to park up to three cars or trucks.
A more affordable option is to place three garage doors on the side of your garage, rather than on the front (gable) end. Popular sizes for three-car garages with doors on the side are 20×30, 22×35, and 24×35.
What is the size of a 4-car garage?
A four-car garage is typically at least 40 feet wide and 20 feet deep. The dimensions of a more spacious 4-car garage would be 48×24. It is also possible to park four cars in a 24×35, 2-bay garage by parking your less frequently used cars in the back of the garage, and your daily drivers in the front.
For a 4-car garage, it is more affordable to place 4 garage doors on the side of a garage building than to put them on the front (gable) end. We can deliver custom garages of any dimensions. For a four-car garage, I’d start with a 24×45 building and add four garage doors on the side.
