The Great American Garage Soundcheck

There’s something special about the moment you click play before diving into a project. The right music has a way of making the whole experience feel less like a chore. But what exactly are Americans listening to in their garages and workshops, and how does it affect the work they do?

To find out, Alan’s Factory Outlet combined a large-scale Spotify playlist analysis with a national survey. We captured both real listening behavior and self-reported preferences to bring you the soundtrack behind America’s DIY culture.

Key Takeaways

  • Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, and Lynyrd Skynyrd are the top 3 most-featured artists across over 600 DIY playlists on Spotify.
  • Americans say Taylor Swift is the best artist for boosting productivity on DIY projects.
  • Rock (34%) dominates America’s DIY playlists on Spotify, but surveyed Americans said pop (43%) is their No. 1 workshop genre, revealing a gap between what people curate and what they claim.
  • “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival was the No. 1 song across 644 DIY playlists on Spotify, making it America’s undisputed garage anthem.
  • Nearly 1 in 5 Americans (19%) have messed up a DIY project because they were too into what they were listening to, costing an average of $50 per mistake.
  • Nearly 1 in 3 Americans (32%) choose what project to work on based on what they’re in the mood to listen to, flipping the assumption that the project drives the playlist.

What’s Actually Playing in the Garage

When it comes to the playlists Americans actually build and use, rock reigns supreme. Here are the top genres, artists, and songs that consistently play in workshops and garages nationwide.

An analysis of over 600 DIY-themed Spotify playlists found that rock made up 34% of the music, followed by country (22%) and metal (20%). Hip-hop/rap (10%), EDM/electronic (7%), and punk (6%) rounded out the mix.

Interestingly, when survey respondents were asked about their preferred workshop genre, 43% chose pop, making it the most popular. That’s a notable gap between what people curate and what they claim to enjoy. Maybe we’re all just a little less self-aware about our listening habits than we think?

At the artist level, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, and Lynyrd Skynyrd appeared most often across playlists, followed by Creedence Clearwater Revival and AC/DC. But the song that’s become the undisputed anthem of the American garage is “Fortunate Son” by CCR.

How Music Shapes the Way We Work

Music’s influence in the workshop goes well beyond ambiance. A full 88% of survey respondents said music improves their enjoyment of a project, and 80% said it increases their productivity. Taylor Swift ranked No. 1 as the artist most likely to boost productivity.

Infographic on how playlists affect DIY productivity, including top genres by generation.

Music was the clear favorite for DIY audio, with 77% of Americans choosing it over podcasts (16%), audiobooks (4%), and talk radio (3%). Listening habits also extended beyond the workspace, with 96% of respondents playing their DIY playlists outside of projects.

More than half of Americans (59%) reported working longer than planned because their playlist was too engaging to stop. And 32% said they choose what project to work on based on what they’re in the mood to listen to, meaning the playlist sometimes drives the project, not the other way around.

Music taste in the workshop also varied by generation. Here’s what each group said they prefer to listen to while DIY-ing:

  • Gen Z: Pop, hip-hop, alternative/indie
  • Millennials: Pop, classic rock, alternative/indie
  • Gen X: Classic rock, pop, alternative/indie
  • Baby boomers: Classic rock, pop, country

Generational gaps showed up in music discovery, too. While 60% of all respondents said they discovered a new favorite song or artist while working on a project, that number climbed to 71% among Gen Z and dipped to 49% among baby boomers.

When Music Leads to Mistakes

Nearly 1 in 5 Americans (19%) admitted to making a DIY mistake because they were too absorbed in what they were listening to, costing an average of $50 per mishap. Gen Z reported the highest rate of music-related errors at 26%, compared to just 12% of Gen X.

Project mistakes linked to music varied by genre:

  • Most likely to make mistakes:
    • Punk (27%) — average cost $20
    • R&B/Soul (25%) — average cost $45
    • Alternative/Indie (24%) — average cost $25
  • Least likely to make mistakes:
    • Classic rock (17%) — average cost $50
    • Metal (18%) — average cost $50
    • Country (19%) — average cost $108

For those who tackle DIY projects with a partner or family member, music can occasionally become a point of contention. Among respondents who experienced friction while working with others, 38% said disagreements over genre or artist caused the most conflict, edging out disputes over volume (25%) and whether to play music at all (20%).

On the lighter side, 45% of Americans reported playing music loud enough to sing along or at maximum volume. Whether that’s a productivity strategy or just pure enjoyment, we’ll leave that to each household to decide.

Creating a Garage Space You Actually Enjoy

For many Americans, the garage isn’t just a place to park a car or check off a to-do list. It’s a personal space where the work itself becomes something to look forward to. The right playlist helps, but having a space that’s actually set up for the way you use it makes an even bigger difference.

That’s where Alan’s Factory Outlet comes in. Our garages, carports, and metal buildings are built for everyday use, so whether you’re deep into a project or just enjoying a few hours to yourself, the space works with you.

Methodology

To identify the songs, artists, and genres that dominate America’s DIY playlists, Alan’s Factory Outlet analyzed publicly available Spotify playlist data compiled via search scrape in early 2026. Seventeen DIY- and workshop-related search terms were used to surface relevant playlists, including “garage,” “man cave,” “woodworking,” “workshop,” “working on cars,” “lawn mowing,” “home improvement,” “mechanic,” “yard work,” “renovation,” “landscaping,” “home repair,” “dad garage,” “house project,” “mowing,” “shop music,” and “garage music.”

The resulting dataset comprised 192,215 track entries across 644 unique playlists, representing 109,222 unique tracks and 36,554 unique artists. Rankings were determined by the number of playlist appearances for each track or artist across the full dataset.

Alan’s Factory Outlet also conducted an online survey of 1,001 U.S. adults to explore music and audio listening habits during DIY and hands-on projects. The survey was conducted in 2026. Respondents ranged across generations, including Gen Z (15%), millennials (51%), Gen X (24%), and baby boomers (9%), and included both women (52%) and men (48%).
